Take Steps To Prevent Yourself From Catching A Cold

You see the signs everywhere; people sneezing, coughing, red swollen noses. Cold season is here. What can you do to prevent a cold? It may seem inevitable that you’ll wind up with the same fate, as those around you but there are some things you can do. One simple and very obvious thing you can do is wash your hands often, especially when cooking and after using the bathroom.

Another thing you can do to lower your risk of developing a cold is to avoid touching your nose, this is because the highest concentration of cold viruses are in the nose. Once you touch your nose, you’ll invariably touch other things in your environment: toys, telephones, toothbrushes, just about anything and contaminate them. The same thing goes for touching your eyes and ears if you want to prevent a cold.

If you have sick child; one important thing to do is to remind your children to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. This will reduce the amount of viruses and bacteria floating trough the air. Of course you can’t catch every last sneeze and cough so you may want to invest in a HEPA air filter to help prevent a cold.

One trick many of our mothers taught us is to assign each sick person in your home a bag to place his or her used tissues. This can really help to prevent a cold. When the bag is full they can place it in the trash so that other people don’t have to touch them. This is especially important within the first three days of infection since this is when they’re most likely to infect you.

While you’re out and about you may think that trying to avoid all germs is futile. If you keep a bottle of antibacterial gel handy in your purse or car, you can discreetly use it in cases where you unavoidably shook hands with an infected person. This will help you prevent a cold by keeping your hands clean.

Getting a good night’s sleep may not seem all that important but it’s immensely important. Adequate amounts of sleep aids your immune system hence keeping you well and active. It has a big impact on helping to prevent a cold.

Take a good look at what you’re eating. If you want to stay healthy, it may be a simple as making sure you get your daily amount of fruits and veggies. Are you eating mostly highly processed, high sugar, and high sodium foods? Your local library has a wealth of healthy cookbooks that should be able to give you a few simple easy healthful meal ideas. They can also help you eat the right way to prevent a cold.

Sometimes avoiding catching a cold may seem impossible but if you follow some of these suggestions you may just prevent a cold in the first place.
