Healthy Child Development
From the very beginning there are many influences that shape healthy child development. Positive interaction from adults is the most important part of your child’s learning process. Children need the stimulation they get from adults so that they can learn and develop their own skills. This input should not be limited to just parents but also include other family members, friends and teachers.
Emotional development comes from your child’s early experiences. Try to develop a sense of trust and security by being affectionate and consistent in your responses towards your child. The calming influence you create helps them to understand their own emotions. If they can achieve this then they will be more confident within themselves. It also helps them to understand the importance of respect in response to others.
Nutrition and exercise are important for the physical development of your child. Make sure they eat a healthy nutritious diet. Growing children need to establish healthy eating habits to ensure their continuing physical wellbeing. Exercise for your child is usually in the form of play. Aerobic exercises such as running and jumping around are good for overall body condition. They also help improve endurance. Try to include slower stretching exercises to improve flexibility and muscular fitness.
As well as encouraging physical activity you should limit the amount of time that your child is inactive. Set limits for time on the computer, watching TV and playing video games. This will also add to the development of social skills. Your child will learn the importance of rules and that they are there for a good reason.
Be involved in your child’s cognitive development by providing a stimulating environment for them to learn in. Be supportive and ready to listen to your child’s needs. Find the time to play with them, encourage their reading and maybe find out information together. Help them discuss their feelings and experiences with you. This will help with their social skills by giving them the competence to respond to contact with others.
Remember that your input from a very early age is very important. By caring for, and nurturing, your child in the early years you will help to shape their healthy development. By giving your child a great start in life, you will reap the benefits for years to come by watching them develop into well rounded adults.
